Last November, acclaimed bassist and longtime friend Tom Kennedy called to say he was working on a new track for his upcoming CD, a song featuring jazz guitarist Chuck Loeb, and would I like to be on it, singing the melody along with the guitar in places? Would I?! Yes. The next week I recorded vocals in ATL while Tom directed from NYC via Skype.
The CD, POINTS OF VIEW, released April 7, and I’m happy to be a part of it, singing the melody with Chuck’s guitar on Track #3, “New July,” a tune written by Roger Guth (drummer with the Jimmy Buffet band since 1989). The song features a funky-smooth groove that gets in your head, with solos by Chuck, Tom, saxophonist Bob Franceschini and drummer Wes Ritenour. Love the tune and the whole CD, which is exceptional listening. Players on it include Lee Ritenour, Mike Stern, Bill Evans, Charles Blenzig, Dave Weckl, Wes Ritenour, Bob Franceschini, Obed Calvaire, Nick Marcione, Richie Morales, Bob Malack and Randy Brecker. … Congrats to Tom on a great release! Visit Tom’s website for info and copies of “Points of View.”
UPDATE, August 2017: My condolences to the family and friends of Chuck Loeb, who passed on July 31. I feel grateful to have met him last April after seeing him perform a fantastic concert at Suite Jazz Lounge in Atlanta. I was at the end of long line of fans and watched as Chuck signed dozens of CDs and said hello to all. We chatted about his show, his music, his wife (who is a vocalist), and “New July.” It was lovely to talk with him. I left with a signed CD, thankful to have met him, heard him, and for the music he gave.
